Stēvi M Interview
Q: Can you talk about your musical history?
A: I have been singing since I was very little. I always knew I wanted to sing and perform. I loved pop music and Broadway music and started writing music as a young teen. I went to college for music and then got a masters in classical music performance. After that I was a classical and crossover soprano for years until I got sick and a voice injury shut me down for about over a year, which forced me to rethink and reprioritize. I came out the other side as a pop songwriter and recording artist. Whew!
Q: What are some of the topics and themes you explore on Watch Me Go?
A: Watch me go is about realizing that I don’t need to be invited to do everything I ever wanted. I can invite myself and just go for it! I was very much inspired by my journey with Latin ballroom dance that I started over the pandemic as a way to keep joyful movement in my life. I made sure to use some dance terminology to pay homage. Ivy States helped me finish the lyrics and then bring the ballroom to life musically!
Q: What was the recording process like for Watch Me Go?
A: It was so much fun. I recorded from my home studio on Long Island. Then I sent it to Ivy and he worked his crazy wizardry with it and sent it back. This was one of the first songs where I basically had no notes. I was floored how he created this whole universe of sound.
Q: How do you approach songwriting?
A: I usually start with the message or topic of the song. I do some free writing or “brain dumping” about the topic. Somewhere along the way something catchy will come to me and I will build on it. I write a lot when I am in the car or before I go to sleep. I also love to co-write because then we get to feed off each other’s energy and take the best of both/all of us. In Watch Me Go we did all of these things. Ivy helped me refine and finish my lyrics and then he added his super sexy rap section.
Q: Have you played this music live and if so how does it translate with an audience?
A: We have not played it live yet! I would love to but we both live in different parts of the US. We have actually only met in person one time on at a music conference!
Q: What else should we know about your music?
A: I really try, with my music, to help people to see their worth. You are stronger, more beautiful and more deserving than you could ever imagine. You don’t have to wait until you are perfect to create your dream life. That’s a lie that has been told to us and we can unlearn it and be so much happier and of more service.
