I remember being fourteen and making a drum kit from literally pots and pans. My friend played the guitar while I tried to make something sufficient. I remember it being pretty bad and luckily there are no known recordings of this music.
This brings me to my recent exposure to the Chicago-based group Potts & Pans Steelband. Take my idea as a fourteen-year-old and add professional musicians, steel drums and some unique concepts and you have a group that is a must see live experience. From my Internet research the band doesn’t have too much in the form of recorded material but they do have a couple of Youtube videos that are exciting to watch and hear.
Potts & Pans Steelband is really more than just a group. They are an organization that provide educational services one of which is where they will teach you how to play the steel pan. It also seems like the band has done their fair share of weddings and events. After watching their videos this is a group that brings good vibes.
Who needs a forty-year DJ who will mostly likely be drunk and complaining anyway? I want percussion and lots of it. As a matter of fact I think I might hire them right now to surprise my good friend John by waking him up with an explosive performance of “Feliz Navidad.”
