OPHÅNIM Interview
Q: Can you talk about the history of OPHÅNIM? How did you two find each other and start making music?
A: Carolyn: We straight up met on the Internet. I create music on Twitch and he found my stream one evening and we hit it off really well. One day he asked if I wanted to do a collar as our solo act names, and through making that EP we realized we should make this a real duo.
Q: What inspired you to make OPHÅNIM? And is there any meaning behind the name?
A: Jason: The name comes from the Bible, and is depicted as the wheels of the chariot of God. While it is inspired by Christian themes, we are not a Christian band. The name is intended to evoke images of celestial and futuristic imagery.
Q: Can you talk about some of the themes on the album?
A: Carolyn: Much like the name, the album encompasses an overall otherworldly vibe, while also touching on mental health and contemplating existence.
Q: What is your creative process like?
A: A song can start from one person or the other creating a simple foundation and sending that back and forth until we love it. Or an entire piece can come together organically in real time in the same space or DAW.
Q: What was your recording process like for OPHÅNIM? And has it changed over the years? It seems like you use a lot of synths. Would you explain some of the tools you use?
A: The majority of this first album was made several miles apart. We put the finishing touches on when we finally met in person. We’ve been together just over a year though, so not much has changed, though we have the ability to create in real time and in the same room now!
Q: How do you usually go about writing lyrics?
A: Carolyn: I usually hear or see something that I think is cool and write it down in a note with other one liners and stanzas, then go over those to see what can fit together. Other times, the music just inspires words to literally fall out of me.
Q: What else should we know about your music?
A: You can get our record right from our website, just in time for its one year anniversary on Halloween. Visit www.ophanimmusic.com and thank you so much for listening!
