NepCali Interview
Q: Can you talk about your musical history of Nepcali?
A: Nepcali was founded in 2015 by vocalist Arpan Karki and Sushant Amatya in Long Beach, CA. Both arrived to the United States as immigrants to pursue their career in education. However, upon meeting each other in 2015, they decided their fate was in something else. They formed Nepcali, and began the growth. The band has been affected by many lineup changes, even recently. Founding member Sushant Amatya had returned home to Nepal in the start of March, 2020 and has been unable to return to the United States. This led to Nepcali to change a few of their band members.
Musically, they create a unique sound from using multiple languages and dynamic tone. The band describes their music as “Touch of Himalayas mixed with the waves of Pacific Ocean.” An underground following has emerged for the band within Southern California, Asia and Europe.
Q: What are some of topics and themes you explore on some of your recent remastered single “No Regrets?”
A: “No Regrets” is mostly based on the struggle of our vocalist Arpan (Ap). Arpan wrote this song talking about the struggles in the states being an immigrant student and not being able to live according to the society set standards. It also touches little political issues like how we have been enslaved to government systems and its rules and regulations.
Q: How do you approach songwriting?
A: We describe our songwriting process as magical. We usually lock ourselves inside our studio and sit there and start everything from scratch. Our guitarist is a backbone of creating an amazing and catchy riffs followed by our drummer Scot Collins. Once all the members agrees on music or sound then our singer “Ap” starts his lyrics process. Ap comes with the topic and we start building the structure. We love this whole process cuz it’s very spiritual and magical.
Q: Have you played this music live and if so how does it translate with an audience?
A: Yes, we have. “No Regrets” is the first song of our set right after our intro part. This song has been able to touch many people’s hearts and has been favorited by many. The recent song and video release of the remastered track has done more than 19k on YouTube and counting. Also it has been getting lots of plays on other streaming platforms as we speak and we hope it keeps growing.
Q: What else should we know about your music?
A: We like to keep our music very clean and simple but we always try to add a little flavor of Nepal and its mountains. Our mission is to give our audience a complete new taste of heavy rock music. We want to combine the style and culture of both nations and keep entertaining people with our creation. Our journey has just begun and we have a long way to go.
