Joseph Burns Interview
Q: Can you talk about your musical history?
A: I am self-taught, and have been playing bass guitar for over 20 years.
It's my goal to play sounds on the bass guitar that nobody has ever heard before.
Q: What is your creative process like?
A: Each song has a spiritual connection for me. It must be emotionally moving. I try to add song sections with Improvisational playing. When you play the songs you know, it's like taking the same familiar road home, when you play Improv it's like taking a new, unfamiliar road, and deciding your destination along the way.
It's important for me for musicians to play music that is "true" and "honest" to themselves.
Q: I was wondering how you would explain the themes and concepts on Deliverance Machine?
A: "Deliverance Machine" is an assisted suicide device famously used by Dr. Jack Kevorkian. Euthanasia. I choose the title, because the themes are about the death of the Ego, and then experiencing a Rebirth, and reinventing one's self. Then you know all the strife was for a reason. It makes you the strong person that you are today, with a House that's built on rock.

Q: What is your recording process like?
A: All of the songs on the album were recorded in one take, with an improvisational approach. I would start the drums, then add my bass rhythm loop, and then my bass solo. There was no extra dubbing. I wanted to capture the live feel of the music as best as possible. The bass loop pedal is the most reliable band member I've ever played with. Everything was done with a minimalist approach: One Bass, One Person, One Pedal.
Q: Is the band working on new music?
A: Currently, I'm working on the remix of Deliverance Machine. Around half of the album is finished so far. You can find the re-envisioned song tracks on all streaming platforms. The remix album will be titled Force of the Machine. My next album of all original music will be released next year and will be titled Resurrection Man. This album will be more song oriented with lyrics, synth keyboards, and a bass solo when appropriate.
Q: Have you started playing shows or virtual shows?
A:I am playing shows in the San Antonio, and the South Texas area. The hopes are to do a larger tour in the future. If you would like to hear my music in your city, I would like to come play there. Please check my Facebook Page: Joseph Burns Bass for more info on shows. When the sun is raised high, when the wind is blowing, I'll be out there with my bass.
Q: You mention that the album has "chill out" or "dinner music.” Can you expand on that?
A: "Chill out" is music that helps you get into a meditative state. I hope that my music can help people to heal. It means you put on your favorite song, and put the earbuds in and the rest of the world drops away. With all the grief in the world it's essential to have music as a refuge.
"Dinner music" is relaxing music that you can listen to while doing other activities, such as: having dinner, shopping or watching TV shows. I would like for people to play my music in the background, but not overtly focus on the songs. It's like film music, the songs are just to support moments in the film. "Dinner music" is background music for life. It's a symphonic film score that begins at birth and concludes at our time of passing.
Q: What else should we know about your music?
A: This is only the beginning for me! I plan on making the best albums, better than ever before, for the fans. I want to do bigger and better things than ever before! With only a bass guitar as my sidekick. There is a clear vision of where I want to go and what I want to do. I want to reinvent the approach to bass playing. I want to play songs and sounds that nobody has ever heard before, and push the boundaries and limits of the bass guitar. I want there to be a new prototype of bass players in the future. This is what I've been put on Earth to do. And this is the music that's in my soul!
