Jenny Kickstand interview
Q: Can you talk about your musical history?
A: I received my first guitar when I was twelve, and played it constantly. I was a huge Van Halen fan, so I was always trying to play as fast as possible. Ha! I learned the business side of music from my father’s gospel quartet.. They had a really good biz model, and were able to make it in showbiz. I have been in bands my whole life, but it wasn't until I met Producer Chas Sandford, when I decided to be more serious. I had always written songs, but never really did anything with them. When I got with Chas in his studio, we were able to produce some amazing songs. Since then, I have been able to secure a great band and make some good friends in the business.
Q: What are some topics and themes you explore on some of your recent album Between The Lines?
A: This album Between The Lines is a concept album. It was written and finalized during the pandemic, when we were not allowed to play music live. The songs tell a story, and while the story line seems like a relationship, it is actually about the music itself; Or where my feelings were about the music. The album starts off with "Love It Or Leave It,” which was my initial feelings about playing music. And that song sets the theme for the rest of the album. From there you have "Standing In The Doorway" and “Solo." Both are about the desire to leave it all behind. Then you get "Never Gonna Let You Go,” which is about the regret of leaving it behind. "Tonight" is about dreaming of what you had, and trying to stay in the dream. "One More Day'' is simply about having one more day with your love (The Music) after it is gone. "Take Me Back To The Time'' is about remembering what you had and wanting to go back. It's a nostalgia piece.. "Death Trap" seems like a song about a bad relationship, but it is also about the music. Simply stating that it was the death of me from the beginning. That song ends with a bang. Literally. Then we are introduced to our stripped down version of "Jumpin' Jack Flash.” This is the rise of the phoenix moment, after the music is reborn. Then the album ends with "Only Love Can Break Your Heart.” This amazing outro sums up the whole album, and plays like a musical anthem.
Q: How do you approach songwriting?
A: I usually start from a guitar piece and add layers until I find a good melody. But this album was a little different. Since I was trying to go with a concept or common theme, I started most of the songs with the lyrics. From there, I figured out what key and tempo would work best, and went from there.

Q: Have you played this music live and if so how does it translate with an audience?
A: We just released the album on June 9th, so we haven't played the songs out yet. We are very excited to do so when the time comes. Some of these tracks have multiple guitar parts, so it will be interesting to see how it all works live. We will likely have to hire a touring musician to handle all the subtle parts, but we will see.
Q: What else should we know about your music?
A: This music is diverse on purpose. We are all fans of all types of music, so it only makes sense to have a diverse album. From beginning to end, the music goes from hard rock, to alt country, to punk and soft rock. We have enough material for a couple more albums already, so the future is looking great for us, and we are more than ready to introduce our music to the world!!
