Izzy Outerspace Interview
Q: Can you talk about your musical history?
A: I played the flute and some guitar when I was a kid, but I didn't write my first song until my late 20s. Around the same time, I started playing in a band (Warm Nights) and it was my first introduction to live performance. I started my own project’Izzy Outerspace in 2020 as I just had written more and more songs that I felt called to put out. Street performing has helped me a lot in developing my voice and guitar work.
Q: What is your creative process like?
A: I try to sit down with my guitar every day and write something, anything, even if it's a little chord or one line. Sometimes a full song comes out. I do a lot of object writing, where I just have one word and I'll write lyrics from one word. I often don't feel very creative, but I think just sitting down and working anyway, has helped me to still create.
Q: I was wondering how you would explain the themes and concepts on your latest release Caught?
A: I feel there's variety in the songs, I definitely feel like it's less rock inspired, which my last record was. It touches on a softer, introspective, and more vulnerable side in me, while not taking myself too seriously at the same time. We wanted to create a bit more of a cinematic feel to the record. I do like to create some drama in my songs and I really enjoy going off into a fantasy to add dream-like qualities to the sound.

Q: What is your recording process like?
A: For this record, my producer Aaron Zee and I, first recorded “Enough,” just me and guitar, and kinda developed the whole record from there. We brought the whole band in and recorded live for some of the songs, e.g. for "Metal Arms" or "The End". It took us around four-five months to flesh it out.
Q: Since you first started writing music do you feel like you've drawn inspiration from different places?
A: I think I just draw a lot of inspiration from feelings and being human, and the fickleness of it all.
Q: Have you started playing shows or virtual shows?
A: Yea, I play mostly around LA and Long Beach. I have done a couple of virtual shows too, and I enjoy going live on IG recently.
Q: What else should we know about your music?
A: If you like dream-, nostalgia and/or ambient pop, you should definitely check out the new record:)
