YP EP

I was impressed with Yesterdays Promise before I even heard them. The band originated in 2002 and although one of the founding members tragically passed away they managed to reform and keep the dream alive. They recently released a very solid EP entitled YP EP and are prepping for a new full-length album.

When I started listening to YP EP I was immediately struck by the production. It sounded just about perfect for the type of music they were playing but when I dug a bit further I got an answer why. Yesterdays Promise partnered with producer/engineer Adam Teller (Asking Alexandria, Animate Escape) who captures the intensity and passion of the band. The snare drum strikes like a machine gun, the vocals soar with the perfect amount of hall reverb and the guitars are heavily distorted but not muddy.

For the type of music these guys play they do it very well. The band has the technical chops as well as the creativity to keep the songs engaging. Take for instance the first song “Still Burning.” The song begins with a cascading guitar riff that soon gets bombarded by deep kick drums and bass. When the verse hits the vocals come in and the drummer flexes his muscles a bit pulling off some sick action on the toms.

As my eyes drifted to the second track I was excited to see one of the most recognizable songs on the planet “Everybody Wants To Rule The World.” I have heard some good covers and some bad but Yesterdays Promise pulls it off. Let’s just say their version is a lot heavier and a lot more intense.

The highlight of the EP was “No Way To Know.”  Besides having some of the catchiest vocal melodies I was drawn to the unique cluster of sounds they were making a little after the two-minute mark. I normally don’t enjoy vocal parts that  sound as if the singer is about to pass out but this one got a pass.

The last two songs “Tomorrow's Gone(Acoustic)” and “YP EP” are devoid of percussion and replace their electric guitars with acoustics. It was actually pretty fitting to end the EP this way after the barrage of sounds from the first four songs.

Yesterdays Promise will appeal to fans of bands like Suicide Silence, Blessthefall and Asking Alexandria. If you are into these bands you will want to check this one out.
