Velvet Moth is a band from Adelaide, Australia comprised of Nikko (vocals, guitars), James Beige (guitars), Dee Kay (bass) and Guillermo Montoya (drums). Apparently Velvet Moth is the sister-project for another band called GT Stringer. The band’s self-titled debut Velvet Moth is not only one of the most impressive sounding DIY albums I have heard in recent memory but the songwriting is often exceptional. Velvet Moth take on a ‘70s classic rock sound reminiscent of bands like Cream, T-Rex and CCR to name a few and they infuse it with a good amount of humor. The songs are a blast to listen to and it’s the type of album you can put on at a party and not worry about it.

I have to give it up to Nikko for his vocal work. The guy has a voice that feels tailor made for classic rock. It contains hints of nostalgia, hope and promise. Not since Tame Impala have I heard a singer’s voice that made me reach for my classic rock records.

Nikko’s vocals are the focal point throughout but none of it would work if it weren’t for the top-notch band delivering the goods. The guys are on point. They mix it up between loose Doors like jam sessions to straight up crunchy riffs that any fan of Cream would gravitate towards. 

The band kicks off with “TV Troll.” Just hit play and let the song wash over you. Listen to that guitar riff - great stuff. The song is infectious, contains some killer lead work and is a certified highlight. Nikko’s “Mile-high pie” vocals sound deep at first and slightly humorous in a good way. He changes style and then reverts back again. The music is so loose it almost feels improvised.

As the album progresses there really aren't any duds. It’s consistently strong. The bluesy rhythmic complex “Kickin' mule” is exceptional but so is “Tracey Popplethorn has a lot to answer for.” These guys did their homework. They really nailed that ‘70s sound but they also don’t sound derivative of one particular band. In my opinion this is required listening. You heard it here first. Highly recommended.
