This is Noise is certainly an appropriate band name for the duo Dylan Heeney and Danny Torrez. Their album Fake Terror contains a lot of noise that isn’t for everyone but can be compared to early Animal Collective and Liars. The duo is full of experimental noise ideas and some of it works and some of it doesn’t quite land because of the sub-par recording or delivery.

The duo doesn’t really sing but more or less yells and sometimes heavily manipulated their voices. My comparison to Animal Collective is evident here except it’s hit and miss just like most of the songs on the album. The band tends to get hooked on a groove and not know when to leave it alone. It can come off as self-indulgent unless of course you’re on psychedelics.

The title track opens up the album, which showcases the duo singing within the natural range. It sounded good and the song eventually picks up some steam. Despite the harsh frequencies from the cymbals it sounded good. “Holy Glory” on the other hand was so lo-fi it was really hard to appreciate.

If the band is going to go into higher octaves when they sing they still need to practice how they get there. On songs like “Ladybird” they shriek as if they are a scared teenagers, which isn't the most appealing sound in the world. They get off key and tarnish what could be decent vocal performances. 

“Willoughby” is a long, dreamlike soundscape that really doesn't go anywhere. At times you think there may be a build up but it just kind of falls off. The band has some success on “Monroe” which is a song riddled by white noise and over the top screams. 

The band is certainly a noise band as it does contain similarities to Animal Collective, Deerhoof and Liars. That being said the band isn’t in the same league as those bands right now. At some point the recording quality will have to improve and if they are going to stick with the over the top screaming thing they are going to have to find a way for it be at least twenty-five percent more aesthetically pleasing to the ears.
