The Third Wing self-titled album The Third Wing is a breakthrough of a Cambridge rock band. Definitely has surf rock vibes. Driving drums with tumultuous cymbal use. High powered, energy fueled with seemingly everlasting breakdowns led by a punk sounding main vocalist.
The first song "Caricature" mulls over the topic of living in a society where it is hard to tell if it is real or not. It begs the question is this real or is this my caricature? Lyrics such as, “Surrounded by zombies searching the streets for caffeine” bring light to something we see these days. There are a lot of people walking around that seem to be a bit numb. This song is extremely adrenalin pumped perhaps because the content makes the band and us listeners emotional, or maybe they are trying to wake the zombies up. The next song on the album strangely enough sounds country at times. There is a lot of twang in the breakdowns, but then the guitar breaks open into a more ethereal piece. The band is very young, but their subject matter is advanced. “ I think the nonsense could save us all” is expressed in “Hypocritical.” There are definitely mostly heady topics in this album. I think therefore I am is an ongoing theme here. Their sound is punk rock with cowabunga undertones and fruity jazz accompaniments from time to time. When you put it all together, it gets you moving. There is not much downtime in this soundscape they have produced. It is hard to sit in your chair. Sometimes I think the singer may be trying to say too much and it take away from the instrumentals, however I appreciate the drive to spread a message. The song "Empty Nest" feels less heady and more light and fluffy. It has a catchy bass line and some truly funky fresh fun guitar solos. I could feel myself noodling out a little bit to it. The band seems like they could definitely go the jam band direction if they were feeling that. However, for now I think the succinct punk rock emo vibe fits them like a glove. I recommend it.
