I’m sure The Static Tones rock the socks off the town of Coeur d' Alene, Idaho when they play. The three-piece comprised of Josh Nelson, Ian Nelson and Mario Martinez play rock n’ roll the way it was intended on their album Brotherhood Of Strangers. The music is whiskey-fueled mayhem with enough attitude to get even the most zen-minded individuals to put on their boots and stomp out a fire.
I absolutely loved the production on this album. It’s dirty and distorted but still manages to sound open and spacious. The guitars sound huge and so does everything else. After a brief intro you are blasted to the wall with arena rock sounding drums, white noise and a start-and-stop style of playing that gets your motor running. The band obliterates your eardrums quickly and the end of the song is wonderfully intense. One thing I have to mention is that the names of these songs are badass. “Old Testament Vengeance,” “Greed Ghoul” and “Death On High Heels” are fun to say as well as rock to. “Death On High Heels” is a pure adrenaline push all the way through. The vocals are blood curdling and the guys sound a bit like Queens Of the Stone Age. I loved the energy as well as that bass line which really gave the song an extra boost. The one time the band changes the energy is “Fall Of Man.” It’s certainly not a bad thing and was actually a nice breather before closing out hard with “Brotherhood Of Strangers.” Bottom line is Brotherhood Of Strangers brings the visceral energy that is pretty hard to capture on a recorded format. The raw, visceral energy you get when seeing a band rock live is present on this record. I guess you might see where I’m going with this? These guys probably rock out like beasts if you do see them live so do that if you get a chance. That being said, if you want the energy from a live show rock at your disposal at any time then I suggest picking up Brotherhood Of Strangers.
