The present age is the collaborative efforts of brothers Isaac and Logan Lamers. Their first release entitled You're Everything showcases some potential but also points to a band that is still figuring out their sound. The music is relatively straightforward emo-esque indie rock in the spirit of a band like Death Cab for Cutie. 

The band opens with “Shatter” in which the singer gives a dynamic vocal performance. You will immediately recognize that his voice is similar to that of Ben Gibbards. He puts a lot of emotion in his vocals but he isn’t completely realized as a singer yet. You notice when he is a bit off key or has to strain himself too much to hit a note. That being said when he sings within his range he sounds good and sometimes great. I thought the music was solid especially the bass line but the sub par recording made it sound like a demo (especially when they rock out).

The next song “What Nothing Means To Me” while containing some exceptional guitar work and the drumming ends up sounding a little too similar to Death Cab for Cutie at points. “Don’t Stay” is arguably the highlight and while not on the level of band like Menomena sounds reminiscent to them at times. I'll take it. The closer “Promise” benefits from the best sound quality if only because it’s sparse and revolves around acoustic guitar. Some really good songwriting on this track.

The present age currently has all the hallmarks of a young band. They seem to be relying too much on a sound they have in their head, which sounds a heck of a lot like their influences. The other thing is that there are a number of moments that are noticeably off-time whether it’s a vocal note or a snare drum. 

It’s relatively minor but still something that sets apart newcomers and seasoned pros. Last thing I would mention is that if they hope to compete with The Killers or Death Cab for Cutie the recording quality will have to improve. 

All things considered this is a solid effort but the band still needs to work out some of the kinks and keep on hammering at developing their own sound.  The present age are a band you should keep your eye on.
