The Nightshift. may only have been together now for about six months or so but they are already showing some potential. The first five songs they ever wrote have been released on an EP entitled When We Say It. When We Say It revolves around the bare essentials for a rock band, which include guitar, bass, drums and vocals. The recording quality is decent, not quite professional sounding but slightly above average DIY. At their best they have some resemblance to Modest Mouse while other songs feel too predictable and familiar.

The first song “Elephant Gun” is the clear highlight amongst the five. I thought the vocalist gave his most inspired performance as his delivery feel nuanced and convincing. On top of that the instrumentation is at its best. The guitar work is creative and the delay effect is used tastefully while the bass and drums work in the pocket building the foundation the song resides in. 

“The Advocate” while not a dud doesn't have the energy of the first song. It feels a bit forced at points and production doesn’t sound as crisp here. “Afternoon and Evening” starts with a kinetic explosion of drums and bass that sounded good to my ears. The song was solid but I thought the guitar could have sounded a bit more prevalent in the mix. 

The band dips into a White Stripes bluesy vibe with “Pistol Whip,” which besides “Elephant Gun” was a notable song. The vocalist goes falsetto during the chorus but sounds best during the verse where he’s got a little bit of grit and attitude on his voice. 

Closer “Pirates” showcases some solid guitar work. He shreds some loose, sloppy leads that ultimately serve the song well. For less than half a year of experience together this isn't too shabby. The band clearly has a long way to go to compete with some of the best bands on the scene right now but there’s potential. Solid start - work in progress.
