The Full Woman
self-released; 2015

3.7 out of 5

By Ted Rogen

My first thoughts when listening The Full Woman, which is the sophomore effort from The Night Shift. is that the production and recording quality sounds exponentially better than what I heard on When We Say It. When We Say It was released in the band's infancy and sounded like it. The Full Woman is more refined, more polished and is a stronger release in all accounts.

The band rocks out harder and the band isn’t afraid to experiment and let loose. Take for instance the opener “Raw Fetish” which is a bluesy rock mix that is gritty and infectious. The reverb laced post-rock lead style guitar is engaging that leads into an onslaught of perfectly sloppy transitions. “Golden Eyes” has elements of The White Stripes but doesn’t shy away from going into unique territory. Like “Raw Fetish” the band lets loose towards the end.

“Waves” starts off very soft with guitars that sound as if they are in the other room and vocals that are just above a whisper. It doesn’t take too long for the rest of the band to come into the equation but the dynamics are strategic. They don’t go in like a bull but pick their points where to accentuate the songs. By the two-minute mark the band finds a groove with rumbling bass, drums. The song proves to be one of my personal favorites.

The band reaches some psychedelic heights on “I Don’t Mind.” It’s a song that keeps going up and up and refuses to have any lulls. The guitar solo is one you are not going to want to miss. Great stuff overall with a memorable chorus.

“Survival Pact” is not doubt the most chaotic sounding song. I say that in a good way. The band lets loose and veers into post-punk territory. At around the three-minute mark the song slows down and sounds like it's tearing apart at the seams. They somehow find a way back into a fast BPM that finds the band at their best.

I have to say it is really satisfying listening to a band that with practice and dedication started coming into their own. The Full Woman is a huge step for the band but probably not their most inspired work. Keep it coming guys.
