The Cyrenaics is a band from Richmond, VA comprised of Aaron Apaul (vocals, drums, synthesizers, bass, piano, noise), Ellie Brown (vocals on "Hard to Say") and Adam Leach (guitar on "Hard to Say”). They recently released a three-song EP entitled Best In The World.

The first thing that will attract your attention is the unique voice of the vocalist. Apaul has what you can call an androgynous voice that sounds like he just did a shot of helium. The music is atmospheric and feels as if it could fall apart at any moment. There were a number of things that could have done to improve the recording quality.

The first song is entitled “Conversations With Your Dog I (Radio Edit)” and revolves around dry acoustic drums, an arpeggiated synth, a distorted bass and subtle piano. It’s relatively catchy after a couple of listens but has a very detached quality. I could barely make out any of the lyrics and the chorus attempts to pop falls a bit short.

Next up is “Hard To Say [Feat. Ellie Brown & Adam Leach] (Radio Edit)” which trades in the synths for acoustic guitars. The song’s biggest strength is the vocal harmonies. During the verse the harmonies serve as background but combine during the verse.

“Evolution, Not Revolution... [Feat. BeYay]” sounds less like a fleshed-out song and more like an intro that should have built to something with some more energy. The sound revolves around a couple of synths and a spoken word piece. There really isn’t much here to latch on to or even judge for that matter. 

Best In The World is simply too disparate to feel cohesive. There may be something here but as of right now this is simply a case of wait and see.
