The Amphibs is a three-piece band from the UK comprised of Alex Ball (vocals/guitar), Will Throssell (drums/vocals) and Dan Thompson (bass/guitar). On their debut Let's Just Go Home they showcase jangly garage rock. The songs are straightforward without many surprises and feel like a tip of the hat to The Strokes. Their style is unequivocally similar to The Strokes and the lead singer even sounds like Julian Casablancas. 

The songs are well written and take minimal effort to enjoy. Take for instance the opener “Let's Just Go Home” which touts palatable melodies with an upbeat festive vibe. It’s a catchy tune and I’m sure a good song to hear live but it does little to establish much of a distinct flavor.

The second song “Some Place Else” rides a similar wave to the first track. It’s buoyant, upbeat jangly pop that feels familiar.  Like the first track the band has no problem finding a couple of grooves that are go down smooth and easy. They close with “Guilt Trip” which is yet another well-written, dynamic song but also plays into the tropes of garage rock 101.

The Amphibs formed in the summer of 2015 and released their debut not much later. If you do the math that gave them very little time to even figure out who they are as a band. The fact is that is kind how their debut plays. A young, talented band that has technical talent and can write a  song but who are wearing their influences on their sleeve.

When you look at popular artists they usually have one thing in common. They don’t sound like anyone else. Did anyone else sound like The White Stripes or Fleet Foxes before they exploded? You can sure point to influences but their sound is completely their own.

If the band hopes to make it past their local scene they are going to have start doing some digging and try and find what the aforementioned bands did. The good news is that time is on their side and hopefully we will see a band that is starting to find their own style and sound on their second effort.
