Sun Sessions is a four-piece indie rock band from Fontana, CA, comprised of Mauricio Enriquez (guitar/vocals), Robert Vazquez (bass), Miguel Morales (guitar) and Diego Arca (drums). Their recent release Errors is a demo quality DIY effort, which showcases the beginnings of a rock band that is bound to get compared to artists like The Walkmen, The Strokes and Interpol at this stage in the game. 

The band formed in March of 2015 and the four songs which are on the EP were written, recorded and released by July of 2015. As you might expect the band is still working out the kinks. Errors while well written does little to establish a sound that feels uniquely their own. 

The EP starts with “Call It What It Is” which contains a bit of surf rock and garage rock with jangly guitars, loose drums and impressive bass playing. Enriquez like Julian Casablancas at times has a delivery that is nonchalant. There isn’t much vocal range displayed on the song which leads to an almost mantra like quality. He sings, “I must confess this isn’t how I thought it’d go / Running around waiting for all these signs to show / How could anyone be happy in this town? / Finding that what you want won’t leave you with a crown.” 

“Minus One” is a decent song and I especially enjoyed the descending guitars during the chorus but the similarities to The Strokes were too strong. “Boxed In” is another solid song overall but suffers from minor timing issues when they transition into the chorus. They close with the strong song entitled “We'll Know When It's Finished” which with a combination of the Interpol-esque guitars and inspired drumming has the most energy of the four. The lyrics are also arguably the most effective and thought provoking. He sings, “Seems to be / That we find ourselves / Lost among the words / Trapped in our heads / Reach a point / Where we know the end / Hasn’t come but soon/  We’ll be on the same page.”

Sun Sessions still have some ways to go to be able to compete with some of the aforementioned bands. The production will have to improve at some point and the band will have to find their X-factor. Overall, I enjoyed the EP but the band falls into the category of wait and see. I think with some more practice and time they should be well on their way.
