Sébastien Eballard and Nicolas Thomas started Stolen Sin in 2012 as a cover band but after two years they decided to attempt original material. After listening to their self-titled EP Stolen Sin it seems as if other musicians’ material is harder to relinquish than they expected. The band sounds like a heavy rock/post grunge cover band and the songs feel like a combination of about ten rock bands in one. 

One hears remnants of bands like Puddle of Mudd, Bush and Silverchair without hearing any hint of what makes these songs a Stolen Sin original. The band unapologetically embraces every cliché in the book and seems oblivious to the fact that deviating from a formula that was introduced almost twenty years ago could help separate them from the vast amount of music that came before theirs. 

This is indeed the most infuriating part of the listening to Stolen Sin. The band has obviously put so much time and effort into perfecting this style of music that they have neglected the originality part. I have no doubt that this is because they were a cover band that tried crossing over to an original act. They are really going to have to find a way to make original music without wearing their idols on their sleeves. One suggestion is to start listening to a new style of music. Throw in a jazz or electronic album so you can at least start combining influences. Or even better stop listening to music altogether when writing music and see what happens.

If these guys were around in the mid ‘90s they would probably be on the airwaves right now. Despite the fact that they cling to post-grunge like nothing exists outside of it they know what works to keep the songs moving. On top of that I think that their French accents help a tad in helping creating some sense of separation.

Here are the facts. These guys have a talent but they put 100 percent of their efforts into regurgitating a sound. Even if they could put 20 percent of that effort into finding a way to create a defined, original sound it would be incredibly beneficial. Add some shoegaze elements, maybe a trumpet, or just do something we couldn’t predict. At this point the Stolen Sin EP can be enjoyed if you haven't had your fill of post-grunge bands. The fact is I’d probably listen to an album from that era if I were in that kind of mood.
