Some albums move between styles with enough ease that you don’t really notice the shifts until you step back and take stock of what just happened. Hindenburg Variations from Silver Heir works in that space. The band, T. Miscia, J. Koneval, B. VanDerveer, and C. Sandor, build their sound around a pop-forward sensibility but thread in rock, Americana, and more exploratory touches without making it feel scattered.
“Wrong to Think” opens with a light, almost breezy energy. I liked the instrumentation right away, especially the subtle island feel woven into the groove. The track gradually builds, adding intensity in a way that feels natural instead of forced. “A Few Words” follows with a start-stop rhythm that clicks immediately. I tend to enjoy that kind of structure, and here it adds a sense of momentum while giving the lyrics space to land. “Alexei & Margaret” stands out as one of the strongest performances on the album. There’s a broader, almost worldly tone, and the grooves feel locked in. The piano adds a lot of character, and the vocals feel especially focused. “Optionality Pilgrim” stretches things out a bit more, bringing in a spacious quality at times while still maintaining a playful edge. “An Empty Room” leans into a more introspective mood and feels more weighty because of it. “Footman’s Tale” shifts toward an Americana palette, with detailed guitar picking and piano that give it a warm, grounded feel. “Underground Man” reaches for something more expansive, while “Future Forgot” pivots into a cleaner, synth-driven direction with a noticeable dance-pop influence. The final stretch with “Life in the Old Girl,” “Big Storm,” and “Two by Two” keeps the album’s balance intact, offering variety without losing cohesion. I found this to be a strong album overall. The songwriting feels thoughtful, the performances carry genuine emotion, and the range never turns into excess. Highly recommended.
