Sillyredhat is the recording project for Chance Petek. His recent release End All is a instrumentally sparse five-song EP that has an undeniable indie rock feel. The songs are concise and to the point. Petek builds his songs with a basic lineup of guitar, bass and drums but it works. He is a decent, singer with a good enough voice although sometimes he is slightly off-key.

The recording quality of the EP is decent but frustratingly uneven in volume. “Good Day” is noticeably softer than the first two songs, which points to songs needing to be mastered properly.

First up is “Fresh Wound” which is the highlight on the EP. The lyrics are inventive and display some originality. He sings, “I'm not gonna throw you under the bus yet It just doesn't seem like the right thing to do There were those before, who needed to know the score But you... you're my fresh wound.” The only issue I had with the song was the way the vocal parts were mixed during the chorus. Both of the parts were in need of proper compression and needed the transients tamed.

“The Day We Met” is another solid showing from Petek. His vocal melodies are almost as catchy as on the first song. His stoic somewhat indifferent delivery only works because the   guitar parts are bright and melodic. As the EP progresses you notices shades of Pavement type slacker rock.

This is most evident on “Dead End.” Petek interjects a cynical perspective on life and work. He sings, “I'll work my life away Just so I can get paid Spending all my time with nothing to show I know everyone's the same I'm not special, I'm not different But I can't help but feel relief Every time I up and leave.” He closes with “End All” which is another solid song you can add to the pot.

Petek shows some potential with End All. I have a feeling his best work lies in the next couple of releases but only time will tell.
