Samoaya’s self-titled release Samoaya is completely self-created. The skill of this one-man wonder is incredible. He plays all of the instruments, and does vocals and simply loops them. It definitely feels otherworldly and cosmic. It is amazing to listen to a piece that completely embraces the relationship with oneself. There are elements of rock and ethereal musings. It can relate only to the works of Thom Yorke in its gentle shouts from the heart and its angelic super tones. 

I get the feeling of both harmony and hardship starting with the song “ Kalholan Toukka,” which if I understood Finnish I might have a clue what that means. The song feels tribal and shamanic. Visions of purging and saging, purifying and cleansing the spirit come with this track. Repetitive and trancelike in its instrumentals, fueled with a deep throat singing- circular breathing like presentations from Samoaya himself. Silly little laser beam noises and loopy cartoon like sounds give the listener sweet relief from the songs intense digging through the soul’s layers. It pulls back scar tissue and exposes it with its oxygenated space-like medicine man sounds. I definitely get a Native American feeling. It wouldn’t be Nordic without the bells and whistles – making me feel like I am in an icicle garden, garnished with glittery snowflakes. 

The cosmic sound of bubbles bursting and dialing phones to nowhere of “ Ihme Juttu” married with the crystal sounds projects me into a wonderland I am not familiar with. It feels nebula like and robust as it engulfs me with its sound. Both bleak and magical, the album offers a multitude of emotional exploration. It is definitely an eerie piece that feels powerful and starts at the root of my being. Seems like good music for a soul journey in the desert or to drink a little magic tea to. Each riff of the guitar accompanied by his vocal offerings feels like a vibratory wave starting at my heart and moving outward. It urges deep exploration. 

Overall I think the Samoyaya is work of art that is highly intelligent and taps into the vulnerability of your soul. All of the songs feel like a shamanic soul discovering album. I can just imagine Mr. Miyagi handing this album over to young karate kid saying “Here…to start your journey listen to this album or practice everyday to this. It will bring you closer to where you need to be.” It urges focus, to feel pain and to heal it, and is unsettling in its knowledge of who I am even though it has never met me. It is peyote- tastic!
