Robert C. Fullerton is a self-taught musician who has been influenced by many different genres over the years. He most recent release Never Too Late is a testament that he has learned quite a bit as a songwriter as he delivers nine songs which are quite enjoyable.

At the core of these songs are an acoustic guitar and his voice. Fullerton has a voice that I liked right away. It’s raspy, seasoned and just sounds like he has some experience behind those eyeballs. The music sounds light, relaxed and loose. There isn’t a whole lot of urgency or rocking out. Fullerton takes his time with the songs and doesn’t seemed rush. I found the music to be relaxing and soothing. I’d be more prone to put this on at the end of my workday rather than at the beginning when I need an additional boost alongside my coffee. 

Fullerton starts off with a highlight entitled “Universal Hamster”. He combines his acoustic with a low hanging organ and I thoroughly enjoyed the strategically placed vocal harmonies. The song feels very spacious and has a good flow. Fullerton also succeeds with “Can’t Seem To Find Her.” He sings about his search for romantic love that he can’t quite find. The topic has been covered a thousand times before but it works here. The part that works is the dichotomy that is created between the lyrics and nonchalant almost optimistic deliver. 

“Phantom” while not quite on a par with the first two is a solid melancholy song that didn’t feel as frivolous as the first two songs. The most rocking out Fullerton does is on “Both Ways” as he introduces a smudge of distortion and some impressive lead guitar while “Hard to Be Gone” plays on Fullerton’s strengths.

Never Too Late is an album that feels honest and heartfelt. Fullerton seems happy delivering songs that are easy to enjoy and filled with a good amount of emotion. Not every song was a clear winner for me on this album but a majority of them were. I have no problem giving this album two thumbs up.
