Restless Leg is an Australian Indie band consisting of Fiona Whalley on bass and vocals, Jared Harrison on drums and vocals and Ben Charmie on vocals and guitar. Their album Some Kind of Restless is a follow up to their self-titled debut album that was released in June of 2013. Their sound is a mixture of mellow indie rock, three-part harmonies and nostalgic storytelling lyrics.
The album started with “All That You Want” which had a cool, laid-back indie rock vibe with simple vocals and fun harmonies. There was something old-school about the harmonies that I really loved. Restless Leg’s songwriting style is personal and straightforward, riding the border of folk, but not actually crossing over. Their lyrics are like having a conversation with a friend. It reminded me very much of Americana folk rock; songs that are mellow and upbeat yet tell sad intimate stories. “Sunlight and the Sepia Tone” is a perfect example of that with lyrics describing looking back at a fond memory while soft boy/girl harmonies bring life to the words. A stand out track for me was the title track “Some Kind of Restless” which was upbeat and fun with a classic sort of vibe. The same feeling continued into the following track “Dusty Morning” which had a great chorus of fun doo-wop style harmonies and a lighthearted vibe. The final track “Of All the End Stories” was probably my favorite. The bittersweet lyrics about burying a friend had a swaying melody that made for a sweet backdrop for such a personal sentiment. I loved the slightly off-key falsetto in the chorus that echoed the emotion of the song so perfectly. Some Kind of Restless is a really well-done album. I love how the melodies and arrangements perfectly complement the raw emotion of the lyrics. The songs are mellow yet upbeat while sounding extremely real and authentic. The guy/girl harmonies are so endearing and overall I just really dug the whole thing. A lot of the tracks were very similar, so maybe some diversity and risk-taking could liven things up a bit, but I still really love Restless Leg’s vibe. I look forward to more.
