The young, spirited vitality of the English band Only Sun bursts through loud and clear from the very start of Only Sun EP. At the beginning of the opening track “What We Started” pounding drums throb urgently as Euan Bryden’s voice and a chorus of electric guitars join in, adding a minor melody to the beat.

The blisteringly fast-paced tempo is solidified throughout the verse and chorus, merging with occasional background vocals and harmonies that border between singing and yelling in the controlled chaos of the song. During the bridge, all of the instruments drop out, leaving only Bryden’s robust voice to carry on the energy, which he does with style - not an easy task. As the instrumentation culminates once more in a final hurrah, the reverberating echoes of the last sounds leave the listener invigorated and wanting more.

The next tune on the EP “Dawn (Part 2)” is heavily toned down compared to the first song, a slight recess from the flood of turmoil angst. This song is surprisingly catchy, and it carries a gentle and much more melodic tone throughout. Before reaching the dynamic climax, the first two-thirds of the song essentially serves as a gradual build up to the phonic peak. Being only three minutes in length, the end of the track seems a bit abrupt, but aside from that, this is a solid number.

The final half of the EP ends in a rapid flash of energy. “Take Care” features a strong, danceable beat and rhythmic lyrics that combine in a refreshing, upbeat manner. Reminiscent of well-known bands such as Walk the Moon and Two Door Cinema Club, the song is infused with constant strumming and quick hi-hats that drive the song home. “Impact of Innovation,” the final track on the EP, is relentless, providing a powerful close to a well built record.

Overall, this young band has created a short set of songs that give their audience an idea of what they are capable of doing. Well-rounded, bold, and musically mature, Only Sun has successfully managed to avoid many naive mistakes that can cause songs to become tedious or repetitive, resulting in an outstanding EP. It can be hoped and expected that future music from Only Sun will only serve to further show off their clear talent.
