Singer/songwriter Nicky P from Philadelphia, PA plays accessible acoustic music that will appeal to a large demographic. The three songs on his recent release Good Thoughts fall in line with a style that emerged into the mainstream for quite some time but has never left. He has a bit of a bluesy/calming side to him akin to Jack Johnson but also tends to deliver some of the lyrics in a Sublime/Everlast kind of way. You have more than likely heard this style before and you will most likely figure out if you will be a fan after the first song.

The music is relatively simple (which is fine) consisting of basic chord progression, bass and sparse percussion per but the production is excellent. At the heart of these songs is an acoustic guitar and vocals.

First up is “Just Like Them” which is the most poppy song of the three. He implements a more standard singing style although I swear there are some lyrics he exaggerates in a way where it sounds like he is singing reggae. The chorus is almost too catchy and is certainly the song you could imagine hearing on mainstream radio and being played during a bonfire on a beach in California surrounded by kids who live in an affluent neighborhood.

On the next song “Good People” he breaks out the Sublime/Everlast singing style I was referring to. The music is a bit more kinetic and upbeat than the first track and contains another catchy chorus although he kinda/sorta scats.

He closes with “I Won’t Give You” which initially gives off that sentimental/intimate vibe that you have heard coming from Jack Johnson and John Mayer. As the song progresses there are some parts where it is very close to straight up rapping. The song is the most dynamic of the three and blends his different styles rather seamlessly. 

Good Thoughts is not an EP for those who need a steady diet of indie underground music. This music is not that. The songs on this EP despite having some very slight blues tendencies ultimately fall into a pop category. Nicky P will resonate with people who appreciate a hummable melody that is delivered in palatable way.
