There was a point roughly fifteen or twenty years ago when indie pop bands figured out how to sound emotionally heavy without losing their sense of lift. You had groups like Peter Bjorn and John, Local Natives, Phoenix, and countless others building songs that balanced melancholy with immediacy. MYOON, the indie electro-pop duo formed by brothers Augustin and Charles Hurez, clearly understand that lineage on Run With The Stars. The record moves between indie pop, synth-driven instrumentals, and contemporary electronic production without sounding scattered or overly self-conscious about genre.

“Boom Boom” opens the EP on a high note and is arguably the best song on the EP. The song carries sadness underneath the melodies, but there is still a sense of momentum pushing it forward. The production is especially strong here. The bass sits low and warm while brighter frequencies surround the vocals in a way that gives the song depth without becoming overly polished. The vocal delivery is memorable immediately. This felt like the band locking into their strongest instincts right away.

“Forward” strips away the vocals entirely and leans deep into electronic textures. I heard echoes of Boards of Canada in the hazy synth work along with some of the sharper pulse of Vitalic. “Dreamer” shifts gears again and sounds like the track most likely to stay with listeners after one listen. The upbeat indie pop energy reminded me of the period when bands like Passion Pit were everywhere, but MYOON avoid turning it into imitation. The hooks are genuinely strong.

“Dark World” returns to more cerebral territory with looping synth patterns that feel hypnotic and slightly detached. “Run With The Stars” moves furthest away from the indie rock roots established earlier. The song leans into sleek modern pop and even R&B textures, which worked for me in parts even if it drifted away from the atmosphere that made the earlier songs connect so well. “Walkin Down The Street” sounded like ambient electronic sketches pushed through a steady 4/4 framework. I kept thinking of fragments of Aphex Twin ambient recordings drifting through a drum beat.

For me, MYOON are at their best when they fully commit to the emotionally direct indie pop side of their sound. “Boom Boom” and “Dreamer” have a confidence and immediacy that give the EP its identity. The electronic experiments are interesting and occasionally excellent, but those melodic songs are where the duo separate themselves from countless revival acts chasing the same era. There is a lot to appreciate throughout this EP, especially for anyone who misses when indie pop bands cared as much about atmosphere as they did hooks.
