Debut records are usually presented as beginnings, but Scenes from a Well Worn Path: Side One sounds more like someone finally opening a drawer full of thoughts accumulated over decades. Music by Jeremy, a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Banbury, England, has assembled six songs that form the first section of a larger 24-track album. His affection for John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, and David Bowie is sometimes apparent, though the record is clearly produced with a modern pop feel.

“Be Me” begins with a tidy guitar figure and settles into an easy soul-pop gait, while its lyric deals with the far less comfortable business of bending your personality around everyone else’s expectations. The chorus is direct without sounding like a motivational slogan. A sliding bass line adds movement beneath an arrangement that otherwise knows when to stay out of its own way.

“The Story of a Mistress” pares things back. The song carries a tale of shame, dependence, and the difficult decision to leave. Jeremy resists appointing a hero or villain, which gives the song more bite than a cleaner moral lesson would. The guitar work is solid and vocals are very produced and sounded like pop singer I have heard before but couldn't think of the name.

​“Bowie on the Wall” looks toward music as refuge, its dreamy guitar and steady drum pattern framing a fond portrait of the artists who help people survive their formative years. “How to Be Good” pairs an expressive vocal performance with bright synth pads. Its direct melodies and familiar rhythms keep the song firmly grounded in pop.

“A Well Worn Path” opens the music up. Agile acoustic runs, prominent fretless bass, and a firm marching beat push the title track toward indie rock without abandoning its folk bones. It is the biggest performance here and the one that best justifies the project’s scale. “Bittersweet” then lowers the temperature with a bluesy pulse and a roomier arrangement, closing on acceptance rather than forcing a neat resolution onto everything that came before.
