self-released; 2015

3.3 out of 5

By Ted Rogen

Moving Through Open Space is a solo project by Evan Vinjamuri. Vinjamuri was previously in post-hardcore bands but wanted to find an outlet for some of his other ideas. His release Unabridged can't be more far removed from hardcore. Unabridged is a continuous session on piano that lies somewhere between easy listening and new age.  After the session was recorded it was split into fourteen songs, which almost felt unnecessary.

The cover art has a symbiotic relationship with the music. The picture of the faded bridge has a lot in common with the music. It’s a faded picture leaving a lot of space. The same could be said about the music. It leaves space for the listener to try and enjoy the relief and tension of each note.

One thing that was should be noted about Unabridged  is that there was no editing or splicing. Vinjamuri intentionally left his minor mistakes in the music. Don't worry there, aren't any major flubs but an occasional timing issue or wrong note does get hit which I thought added some character to the music.

Unabridged will most likely be listened to passively. It’s the type of music that doesn’t need your attention to be enjoyed and in all honesty you might be twiddling your thumbs by the end of the album if you do so. It’s the type of music I could imagine reading a book to, dozing off to or the type of music that someone would put on before an acupuncture session. Above all else it's relaxing. This isn’t the type of music you will want to put on if you need a burst of energy.

There is little point to go through the nuances and subtleties of the tracks. Even though the music was split up into fourteen songs I encourage you to simply press play and listen to it in sequential order. There isn’t a whole lot else to say about Unabridged. If you think you would enjoy a tranquil and melancholic piano piece then I think this is an album you will want to check out.
