Moving Parts third self-titled release Moving Parts is a big step forward for the band. To get directly to the point it’s better in every way compared to their previous efforts. The band’s songwriting is refined; the singing is better and most importantly they are defining their sound. Their previous material often felt derivative of a number of sources but the “indie beach rock” is being realized. The band sounds loose and comfortable with this EP and it really comes across in the music. 

They start out with a fun, upbeat song entitled “Flow.” The music is very atmospheric and light - almost like a dream. Even the lyrics reflect the atmosphere. The vocalist sings, “The days are getting longer, so she starts to speak / My dreams are getting stronger, I think it's time to leap / She says no. It's not time to go.”

The rhythm section does their part in not letting the guitars escape into the ether. I also noticed how the vocalist doesn’t push it as hard as he did on their previous EP. The results are beneficial and felt like he really is coming into his own. Overall, the first song deserves two thumbs up.

But the first song isn’t a fluke as “Subjective” proves.  You are treated to infectious melodies coming from the guitar as well as the vocals. The band pours on a little bit of grit halfway through. They combine distorted guitars with echo like twisted synth sounds, which are brief but effective.

Out of the five songs “Mellotone” encompassed the idea of “beach rock” I had in my head. It’s incredibly relaxing and atmospheric. It’s the same feeling you get when sipping on a margarita while relaxing on a hammock in the summer. Great stuff. The closer “Indiana” is a most rocking song on the EP and I thought it was a good way to end the album. It’s catchy and they get in and out fast.

I got a little bit giddy after listening to this EP because they are growing as a band and moving in the right direction. It put a smile on my face and I think it will do the same to you if you give it a listen.
