Mount Orchid
self-released; 2015

3.9 out of 5

By Megan Gazzo

The self-titled album Mount Orchid by Mount Orchid cruises a bit more on the darker side with hints of sunshine here and again. Deep, vibratory bass plucking that are playful and fun with lonely lyrics. Distant vocal meanderings in chorus bring a big energy to the music. "Take my hand let me show you the devils way" in the song “Devil’s Way” gives me a funky but cavern like sentiment. It is dark and dank.

It’s safe to express darkness and vulnerability joyfully in this album. I really get the beauty in the breakdown with the lyrics and the way the songs thread in and out of my heart. I can feel the small pricks of the initial needlepoint of the deep heartfelt moments and they oscillate in and out of that to weave a beautiful fabric of quilted emotions. The lyrics, "If you're leaving me don’t go far" in the song happy feelings bring us the sentiment of the pain when one goes away from a lacking of the happy feeling when someone you love is around.

Guitar stretches are elongated and electric. The guitar seems almost alien or otherworldly. The singer’s voice is backed up with some crisp angelic voices. Some friendly, familiar fireside guitar strumming serenades the trouble rubble-filled emotionally charged song. Super soft brushes and lightly padded drum thumps. Minute marching band tempo build-ups are sprinkled here and again followed by small stretches of creamy fabrics of sound. It reminds me of when you pour cream into your coffee. It is rich thick and dense, yet creamy smooth and delicious.

The song “Heart & Lungs” hits me deeply. It is tearing at the seams with emotion. There are big build-ups and sudden breakdowns. The singer sometimes sounds like Elvis Costello with his nasally yet cool voice. This album seems like an indie rock lovers wet dream. It is indie, it is fresh, it is hipster.

I like how clean every song is. The content matter cuts deep and dances around my soul. There are some raging guitar solos but mostly just tight, clean, coiled music. It seems like a proper album for some summertime fun. It is dark and emotional, yet fun and fresh. It gives me butterflies like I have a middle school crush. I like how distant the drums are. They seem like little stars dotting the sky of this piece.

I highly suggest this album, especially if you like indie rock.
