In 2009 David Pfeiffer (lead vocals, acoustic guitar) and Frank Tierney (rhythm guitar, vocals) aka Monday Night Mistake turned their apartment into a recording studio that they would use to eventually record their self-titled debut EP Monday Night Mistake. Along the way they became a six-piece band including Mike Lindstrom (drums), Cameron Powell (singer/songwriter/guitarist), Cliff Obrist (pianist) and Will Tierney (bass). The band recorded the album in their fleshed out studio but tapped the shoulders of Grammy nominated producer/songwriter/mixing engineer David Schuler to mix and master the album. I will say that the album from a commercially viable perspective is pretty much perfect. It has that sound that you hear in a Top 40 hit. The vocals are clear, full bodied and cover a lot of frequencies without masking those of the guitar, piano, drums, etc. Bottom-line you play this on a crappy stereo or your laptop speakers it will still sound good. Musically, the band plays accessible pop/rock that will appeal to a large demographic. Truth be told this music will appeal to an audience that prefers songs with a mainstream aesthetic. I can’t see too many hipsters putting this EP between the new Aphex Twin album and a Brian Eno album. Whether or not this is your cup of tea there is no denying the band has talent and has put some serious effort to making songs that will resonate with the listener. The opener “Queen City Blues” slowly fades into an upbeat pop song. It has all the qualities you think of when you think of a “single.” Not too heavy, contains a catchy vocal melody and a song that is good to pop on at almost any occasion. “It is Simple” introduces some emotional weight and melancholy. Most likely this song is the contender to make the ladies swoon. Arguably, the best-written song is “More Than What We Are.” It’s simply a smooth, cohesive song that works vocally and musically. As I said before this music will most likely appeal to a mainstream audience. If you enjoy the Goo Goo Dolls, The Maine and The Fray there is little no doubt in my mind that you just found your next favorite band. Become A Fan
