Smart, sexy, cool and smooth – by the time you’re done listening to Mini Diaz’s Invisible Fences EP, you’re likely to feel all of these things, because that’s the vibe that emanates from her music.
What immediately struck me was how beautiful Diaz’s voice is - it reminds me of the vocals prominent when women like Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston were still actively singing. Most refreshing is how natural and real it sounded; in a world dominated by auto-tune and the ability to sound halfway decent, real talent is something to be treasured. The five-track EP offers a nice variety of songs, starting off with a quick pace. The opening song “Here And Now” has a perfect blend of R&B in the groovy instruments, soul in the powerful vocals and catchy pop lyrics. If you only have time for one song, make it this one; I wish it would make it to the radio because it’s got the right equation to really blow up. “Come Together” also has an incredible chorus that would translate well to a large audience. Things start to slow down at this point with sexy “Sinful,” a song that sashays along like a lady in a red dress, seducing anyone who dares look her way. This is perhaps the intended lead into the beautiful duet “Time Slips Through,” where a male voice that can only be described as handsome comes out of nowhere to grace the track. The two are a wonderful complement. When I thought I couldn’t swoon over Diaz’s voice anymore, “Free At Last” started and I was treated to goose bump-inducing high notes that really put the cherry on top of an awesome EP. Though Invisible Fences arguably sounds very much like something from the late ‘80s, early ‘90s, I think it would have a much greater impact now than back then. I needed to hear this honest assessment of human nature with the kind of delivery that made me want to sing along at the top of my lungs, and I suspect I’m not the only one who feels this way. This EP kept me focused and happy from beginning to end, and for that I really had a great time listening to it.
