Hailing from Columbus, Indiana Matt Hutson is a musician/ songwriter who released an album entitled In Life With A Lie. He plays 90’s inspired rock that could fit into the genre of  alternative. Hutson cites The Posies, Jon Auer and Gin Blossoms which all make sense when you listen to the album.

The recording quality could use some improvements. There wasn’t very much definition in the guitars or drums along with a number of other issues. That being said the vocals treated fairly well and some songs clearly sounded more aesthetically pleasing than others.

In Life With A Lie is hit and miss. Some of songs are immediately enjoyable while others miss the mark.  The first song “White Lie” has some moderate success although the rocking song is held back by the subpar production. He follows that up with “Hi Fi Lo Fi” which just sounds lethargic.  The song's energy feels muffled and depleted.

Hutson pulls off a complete 180 with the next track “In Life With A Lie” which is exponentially better than the first two tracks. The reverb helps a lot and work with his vocals and guitars . His vocal performance is good here and the whole song has a subdued but comforting energy. It works well and is definitely a vibe that works for him.

His next success is “Look At Her”. The song revolves around guitar and vocals. It’s a solid piece although Hutson is noticeably off-key at points. “That’s So Billy” is a decent track. It’s too bad the boxy recording held it back.

Hutson has only been writing and recording since 2010 and given the relatively little amount of time it’s obvious he has some talent. These meager beginnings show potential but is largely a case of wait and see. Hopefully the recording quality can be improved on his next album and he can build off the success he had with the song ““In Life With A Lie”.
