The Gypsy Farm
self-released; 2015

3.4 out of 5

By Ted Rogen

The duo of Ian (guitar/vocals) and Kody (drums) makeup Kwazymoto. They band hasn’t been around very long but already produced a couple of EP’s. The first being The Gypsy Farm which contains seven songs. The Gypsy Farm is a noisy album full of cymbals and white noise from the guitar. At this point their sound isn’t too defined which tends to be the case for younger but this EP certainly shows some potential.

The production is certainly lo-fi and is in the neighborhood of a demo. They worked with their resources and even a twenty five percent increase in quality would have benefited the visceral energy of these songs.

The album starts with “Mary Had an Aneurysm” which is more or less a barrage of distorted guitar. I had a hard time making out the lyrics but when I did make out what he was saying I liked what I heard. He sings about “angel dust” and “fluctuations”. The mayhem continues with “My Hot & Bothered Self” which is an intense song to say the least. It’s harsh and jagged but thoroughly enjoyable

“Untitled” is the first deviation that shows a different side of the band. They remove the distortion and showcase some solid songwriting skills. That being said the song came a little too far from left field and almost felt like a different band until they do step on the distortion.

“Punksca'pade” is a great name anyway you look at and title makes sense once you hear the song. This song is fast and frantic. It falls apart in way that work just before it ends. The band closes with a highlight entitle “A Hate Letter” which actually reminded of Rage Against The Machine at points. I loved the intensity of this song.

Kwazymoto are still a young band with a lot of work ahead of them but are off to a good start. In addition to that this is the type of music that is best experienced live. I bet these guys tear it up in concert.
