The Response You Deserve
self-released; 2015

3.3 out of 5

By Jamie Funk

Jayden Brett (vocals/guitar), Josh Threadgate (guitar), Alex Threadgate (drums) and Simon Threadgate (bass) are Just Ace. First off I love that name and it works especially well for a rock band if you ask me. The band is relatively new and their recent debut The Response You Deserve is a decent start for a band that shows some potential with these four songs.

At this point the band isn’t competitive with the best that rock has to offer but they build a loose foundation with these four songs. Just Ace is more or less tipping their hat to bands that have come before while still trying to find the ingredients that make them stand out from the crowd.

They kick things off with “Come Back.” You get a pretty standard formula of verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge that contains a number of tropes. Overall, not a bad song but a bit predictable. It is probably the most single worthy out of the batch.

The second track contains a bit more originality and I enjoyed the vocal performance more especially during the verse. The vocalist sings, “What you say and what you mean are not the same it seems to me /All the attention that you seek is self serving and pissweak.” As the song progresses it gets more intense as the last minute or so is dedicated to rocking out.

“Child Factory” contains some notable lead guitar work and some good back and forth between the bass and drums. “(Never) Too Old To Skate” was the highlight of the album. The first half sounded similar to some of the other tracks but the punk inspired double timed end with vocal harmonies was indeed the band’s best moment.

The Response You Deserve certainly has its fair share of worthy moments but still is largely a case of wait and see. They may want to consider infusing more punk into the mix because the end “(Never) Too Old To Skate” shows what they are capable of.
