Izzy Outerspace is a songwriter out of LA. originally from Switzerland. We first heard from her with the full length release Amazon and she is now back with Caught. On her sophomore record Caught, she worked with producer Aaron Zee on finding her unique voice. The song “Enoug”' served as the 'home base' to shape the album. She mentions “I wanted to create something very dreamy, but not be stuck with one particular sound. There's a lot of different emotions floating through the record, and I hope the record will take the listener on a journey.”
The album starts with the title song “Caught” and you are greeted with reverb laced guitar and vocals. It’s surrounded with a warm melancholy that has a sense of longing to it. Orchestral strings fade in and add to the emotional resonance of the song. The song gets brighter as it progresses as she sings “how do we go on.” It’s a gorgeous introduction to the album. “Metal Arms” is a very well produced song. I loved how they treated the guitar which juxtaposed against the emotive vocals. The first half of the song is a beautiful slow burn and around halfway through the mix is filled with drums and other elements. It’s got a ’50s and is mighty catchy. Angel Olson came to mind on this song. “Coat” is covered in atmosphere. There’s somehow a sense of tension and serenity. Some of it had to do with the guitar work. This song felt like a cloud of stillness at times. “Just” is another song that builds. It starts minimally again with reverb and vocals leading the charge. There are some beautiful vocals on this song which reminded me of Sigur Rós. The drums drop and the vocals are loose and almost like spoken word at points. There is a lot of range to her vocals and displays different types of delivery. “The End” revolves around distant orchestral strings, guitar at first. The song wraps in a cocoon and then delivers one of the most epic transitions around the two-minute mark as she sings “Is it really the end this time.” “Warm Summer” is definitely the most single-worthy song on the album. It’s infectious and upbeat but still covered in melancholy and nostalgia. The most ambient song is “Enough” and it fully immerses you in a powerful emotion with arguably the best vocal performance. Last up is “Feel This” and felt like a perfect send off. The song felt the most hopeful not only with the music but the lyrics. It’s very dreamlike as if you’re observing life from a different vantage point. The album is around twenty-six minutes long and packed with some of the most memorable songs I have heard. This album showcases Izzy Outerspace coming into her own with exceptional songwriting and production. Highly recommended.
