How can you not appreciate a rock band that doesn’t take itself too seriously? Taking one look at the cover art for Live at Survival by Hot Doggy it’s obvious the band is out to have a good time and take you along with them.

In the spirit of bands like The Minutemen and The Ramones as well as countless other punk bands Hot Doggy plays unfiltered rock that is made for a small bar with drunken patrons as opposed to an arena that are named after an insurance or car company.

Hot Doggy isn’t doing anything that hasn’t been done before but that's really not the point of this music. The music is all about the attitude and delivery. Luckily, the production is just about spot on for the kind of music they play. It sounds like a couple of dudes rocking out in a room - no more, no less. 

The songs kind of run into each other, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but it didn’t feel like there were any songs that were heads and shoulders above the rest. Up first is “No Apologies” which is a guitar heavy song. In some weird way the guitar reminded me of Tom Morello’s style from Rage Against The Machine. The vocalist is dynamic and almost feels like he’s singing lyrics off the top of his head. 

“Heavy Water” has jagged, inventive guitar parts before the energy gets raised around the forty- second mark. I have no idea what the vocalist was saying but it didn’t really matter. “Dirty Little Fingers” has a bit of blues/hard rock vibe going on while the appropriately named “Satan’s Dick” is transcendental chicken scratch not too far off from a band like Les Savy Fav.

I can get down with Live at Survival. More than that though I think I would like to get drunk with the band at least once and then move on with my life.
