Troubatracks, the recent album by Hõm, is built on restraint. It is a minimal release that trusts its limited palette and commits fully to the space it creates. Each song carries small variations in tone and texture, but the record stays tightly connected, unified by pacing, atmosphere, and intent. With this much openness, the vocals have nowhere to hide. Every inflection matters. What surprised me most was how confidently Hõm handles that exposure. The singing has depth and control without tipping into self-importance, striking a rare balance between intimacy and poise.
“Kind of Man” opens the album with a clear statement of purpose. Guitar and voice move in close alignment, with the performance carrying a quiet assurance. The melody lifts naturally while the guitar remains steady, supported by a subtle atmospheric bed that never pulls focus. “Risin’ On Me” shifts the tonal center, leaning into a warmer, earthier guitar sound. The song moves slowly and deliberately, holding a mix of reflection and calm melancholy that never drags. There is hope here, but it is tempered, settled, and unforced. “Years” introduces a gently placed organ that adds weight without thickening the arrangement. “Troubadour Badant” circles back to the mood of the opener, reinforcing the album’s internal logic without repeating itself. These songs rely on patience and trust, letting small details carry emotional weight rather than building toward obvious climaxes. “Show Me the Lake” is one of the fuller arrangements on the record. It skirts the edge of sweetness but stops just short, anchored by a strong vocal performance that keeps it grounded. “Step Aside” is one of the album’s most complete statements, working cleanly from start to finish with a sense of quiet confidence. Closing track “Let’s Go / Palm Trees” pulls back some of the intimacy heard earlier, but its slightly broader scope provides a fitting sense of release. This is the kind of album that resists easy description. Its impact arrives quickly and instinctively, rooted in tone, delivery, and atmosphere more than obvious gestures. My response to Troubatracks was immediate. I trusted it right away, and that trust held through the final track.
