HeavyFoot is a rock band from California consisting of Chris Lunday (vocals, guitar), T.C. Collins (vocals, guitar), Sid Dodd (bass) and Larry Melcher (drums). Back in 2013 they released their debut EP entitled Lift, which has an unequivocal American sound. The band delves into classic rock and flirts with the blues on this EP but it’s the vocals that really play into the American vibe. It’s a vocal style I’m sure you are familiar with. Bands like Nickelback and Creed have imitated the deep, manly, American trucker from the south inflection that originated back in the sixties. 

You can’t help but think of biker bars, whiskey and a little bit of attitude when listening to Lift. The music might not be the most original thing I have heard this year but the songs are well-written and serve as great cruisin’ music in your truck when you are going off-roading. 

The album starts off with “Get Off,” which is the most “single worthy” song out of the batch. Distorted guitars, bass and drums meld into a concoction that sounds like a heavy dose of southern rock with a tinge of AC/DC. It comes equipped with a standard guitar solo and catchy chorus. Good stuff.

I think most people will be familiar with their second track “Last Dance With Mary Jane,” which is a Tom Petty cover. The song is more southern sounding with more distortion. That’s all you really need to know. The band gives you a breather with  “Old Soul,” which revolves around an acoustic guitar and vocals. 

“Red House” is the band's one and only attempt at a blues/rock hybrid. It’s pretty standard stuff adhering to basic blues scales and lyrics about your “baby not loving you anymore” The next two songs “Take A Look Around” and “Warpaint” reverts to the classic/southern rock angle.

HeavyFoot wears its influences on its sleeve and is no way pushing the envelope but it is still enjoyable if you can get down with this style of rock that is becoming more and more absent from the mainstream. Word on the street is that the band is due for a follow up and it has me wondering how the band has evolved. To be continued.
