Last year I reviewed Live @ GBS Detroit by Evening in Red. Since it was a live album it lacked the aesthetics you would expect from something recorded in a studio. Since then the band went on to record some of those very songs on their recent release Red Noise. 

The results are a huge improvement in terms of quality. In fact the quality of the songs was so much better that it gave me more appreciation of the band that I previously didn’t have. The album also contains a number of songs that weren’t on the album which are an indicative of a band that is artistically maturing in new ways.

Just take for example the first song “Peaches On Monday.” The song is a bit rockabilly, a bit standard rock and all good in my book. They find some inspired moments with vocal harmonies and hooks. The song is catchy in a number of ways. Those vocals are infectious but that Strokes-esque guitar part gives it a run for its money. 

Another track that isn’t on the live album entitled “Deep” is another success. The band deviates from typical 4/4 timing and displays some technically impressive timing. I have to give it up to the drummer here for staying in the pocket while showcasing some effective tom work. 

The band goes straight hard rock on “Monster.” It wasn’t a highlight for me but is much more effective here then it was on the live album. I also have to admit the guitar solo was impressive. Another highlight was “No Sleep,” which has a smooth, almost jazz like vibe that merges with rock. The band’s most single worthy track is “Reach Out.” It's a ska-based track that brings to mind a band like Sublime. The chorus is the hook that will get stuck in your head. The band continues to show some solid songwriting with “Until My Thought Ran Down” and the closer “Shiny Sky.”

Evening in Red is at their best when they deviate from typical mainstream hard rock tropes. I think the first two tracks are their best songs to date and I hope to hear more of that inventiveness and creativity in the future. Not every song was a homerun in my book but I think the album is a step forward for the band in a number of ways. The band seems well on their way if they continue to improve on their strengths.
