DP has been working at his craft now for a number of years and you can start to hear the evolution of his music. His music still implements the basic instrumentation of bass, guitar and drums and he still doesn't sing but the music is slowly changing for the better. The songs on his EP Early Morning all revolve around the same palette of sound. The drums rely on fairly simplistic beats (nothing too crazy here) forming a symbiotic relationship with bass while the guitar creates the ambience. It isn’t the most complicated or technically impressive instrumentation in the world but it certainly gets the job done. The first track “TOMORROW” throws together a basic drumbeat, a bass line that revolves around root notes and a reverb-laced guitar that provides the main melody as well as atmosphere. It sounds somewhere between Sonic Youth and Joy Division. I do wish there was some more variation when it came to the drumming but it’s ultimately the guitars that create the atmosphere and focal center of the music. Next up is “I'D RATHER BE UNDER A TREE,” which is a combination of scattered white noise from guitar as well as distorted bass. The drums consist of no more than 4/4 beat from a kick and snare. One of the highlights amongst the batch is “On MY OWN,” which is one of the most engaging tracks on the EP. The song gets more intense as it progresses and also proves to be dynamic. The beginning of “SUNRISE” sounds like a B-side to a Breeders song. Dark tones permeate the landscape and certainly sound good on DP. It’s a style that that fits him well. I have to be honest that I’m not sure as to why DP isn’t interjecting some singing into the mix here. The songs are begging for a vocal part and sometimes have a hard time standing on their own with only instrumentation. As much as I like DP I feel like he hasn't reached his full potential yet. The songs are good don’t get me wrong but I feel he is on the verge of taking them into unique and unexpected territory. One thing is for sure is that he is consistently releasing music and at a fast pace. Someone this motivated will unequivocally be bringing new components to his art.
