Dozeys is a slice of the six-piece band Bears. Two members of Bears Brad Dadson’s and Micyh Peters’ artistic talent was overflowing with new ideas and with that came the six-song EP entitled Hush Rooms. Hush Rooms works on a number of different levels.
It combines blues, psychedelia, garage rock and couple of sub genres into an utterly unpretentious collection of songs. The guys sound loose but display consummate musicianship. They bring a solid dose of originality into the mix and can make cases for them sounding like Pink Floyd to Sunset Rubdown. Either way it works. That Pink Floyd thing I just mentioned is apparent in the first song “Between Asleep and a Dream. “ The spacey, reverb laced guitar combines with drums, bass and vocals to create a sort of beautiful mess. It isn’t till the end of the song that it hits its climax with a shimmering guitar or synth that only adds to the cosmic feeling of the song. The next track “Hush Hush” is more grounded and is romantic garage rock. They break out some distortion and rock out. The lyrics are ambiguous, poetic and on the verge of prolific. He sings, “You’ll die one day and I'll be clenching my teeth, when I do the same I hope there isn’t a sound.” The band finds more success “All You’re Left With.” It features some sweet slide guitar and I enjoyed the vocal delivery. The vocalist’s delivery has a nursery rhyme quality that gets stuck in your head. “Cold” is lush, light and acoustic while the closer “Awful Image” solidifies the band’s talent. It is yet to be determined if this is Dozeys’ first and only release or they will be continuing to make music for this project. What I heard - I liked. With a little tweaking here and there Dozeys can really come into its own.
