Demented Sound Mafia is a collective of producers, composers & sound designers that have been making the music for movie trailers. I’m not talking about indie movies without any budget. Try movies like “X-Men: Days Of Future" and "Oblivion" with world-renowned scientologist Tom “dancing in my underpants” Cruise. As much as these guys are known for making music for trailers they also release full-length albums such as Inspired, which contains fifteen songs of instrumentally rich music. Who is in this collective exactly? I have no idea but I do know that the music on their EP Inspired was recorded between Oklahoma City and Jerusalem. 

Whoever is behind the music is worthy of some kudos because the music is quite good. I can see why this collective has been working with major movie studios. The music is very cinematic and each one of the songs is atmospheric and able to paint a mood. I think you could also fit a majority of this music into the “world” category without much hesitation.

In terms of the production it is nothing less than professional sounding. You can hear the delicate balance of sounds and the rich details that lie within the music. Suffice it to say if anyone wants to hear what a well-mixed album sounds like just listen to Inspired. 

Out of the fifteen songs I felt there were a couple of highlights. “Emperors Of Ice” was a song that I could easily see being in the next Avatar movie as a huge battleship got blown up in dramatic fashion. One thing that I have to mention is just how huge sounding the percussion was. When the drums hit I was initially taken back by the impact. 

“Illusions Of Time” is a hypnotic rush of sounds that combines a whirlwind of instrumentation. The vocal harmonies were ethereal on the verge of angelic. “Galactic Timelapse” was a nice change because of the serenity of it. The song is an ambient soundscape that is nuanced and soothing. 

I’m not sure where Inspired fits in the grand scheme of things besides being an excellent soundtrack for movies. It’s not esoteric enough for indie hipsters and doesn't have enough pop hooks for mainstream radio. The music was enjoyable enough to engage without a visual. That being said, I think it’s only a matter of time before we see the music that this collective makes being used as full soundtracks not just trailers.
