Def Manic is a 21 year old Hip Hop artist, producer and songwriter originally from Serbia and Canada but currently based in Sydney who recently released D.R.A.W. (Do Right And Win). It didn’t take much time for me to realize that Def Manic is the real deal. What immediately drew me to the songs was that Manic put just as much attention in the production of the music as he does his lyrics. Let’s talk about that production for a minute.

The music on D.R.A.W. (Do Right And Win)  isn’t a recycled beat you can buy off the web for 99 cents. It’s a rich variety of organic instruments that include everything from horns, too  key, too  bass and more. There were multiple times I listened to a track where I was so immersed in the music that I wouldn’t have minded if Manic forgot to rap on a verse. So we established the music is on point but can Def Manic spit rhymes. The simple answer is yes. HIs delivery is uniquely his own and his lyrics often form loose narratives about everything from his career too relationships.

The album opens up with “Cosby Kids” which revolves around a dry, jazzy sounding drum kit, horns and keys. I loved the loose vibe of the music that felt like it could fall apart at any moment.  It’s a solid opener that displays his lyrical skills and holds back  the deep, low end for other tracks. “Welcome To The Jungle”  is certified fleshed out song with intricate variations in time that are a lot of too wrap your ears around. A definite highlight on the album.

“Mamacita” is a deep cut that has of the  slickest production on the album. When the hook comes around Manic sings “I just wanna know, whats the fucks up? I just wanna see, you get your time up, I just wanna know, why you gave up? I just wanna see, you get your head up.”.

There aren't too many hip-hop album being released this year that put such an attention on detail. Def Manic is the real deal. You don’t want to miss this release.
