Years ago it used to be that if rock bands from England began to flood the popular American music charts the papers and the industry types would deem it a “British invasion.” But these days everything to me is just music and it seems that in the advent of technology that most other people feel the same way and that the territorial lines which were once so exclusively drawn have now faded. On the other side of the coin, or in this case the pond, I never bothered to find out if the British ever had an American invasion of any sort. 

Well in any case the English pop rock quartet Deep Blue are not shy about their music being influenced by the recently iconic LA based band Warpaint. Warpaint’s signature effects are all over Deep Blue’s debut self-titled three song EP Deep Blue. 

The opening track “Colder” is a slow and wistful rocker. There are steady drumbeats that keep time but also help to keep the tension locked into the song. This tension feels as taught as the strings on the guitar that ripples cleanly throughout. The lyrics are a soft brand of sing-speak that is sometimes sad, and sometimes snotty in that beautiful way that only the British can deliver.  

On the next track, “A Swim Through Red” Deep Blue shows their chops at orchestration. The song feels more fully realized than “Colder.” The entire ensemble of bass, guitar, drums and keyboards comes through and lead vocalist Angela Chase even sounds more confident in her vocal delivery. The final track “Fallen” has a bit of a dance-y disco groove to it and a catchy and jazzy guitar riff. However the lack of a deviation and changeup from this riff makes it sound a bit repetitive and made me long for some sort of changeup.

With their self-titled EP Deep Blue has laid the groundwork for their sound, which is generally the best thing most bands can hope for with a little debut. Judging from the nuances, which creep out during the best moments of these songs, with a little fine-tuning and some hard work they could one day find themselves on the same battlefield as their heroes.
