Jeff Sifferman (vocals/guitar) and Kevin Martinez (drums) started Coyote Bred in in January of this year and already they have managed to squeeze out a five-song EP entitled Great Harvest. The songs don’t need too much explanation, as they are straightforward pop/rock songs with palatable structures that are ubiquitous within popular music. They do flirt within various sub genres to some degree such as pop punk (‘90s bands like Green Day and The Offspring) and ska. The predominant version of rock that they play stems from ‘90s alternative bands like Local H and Gin Blossoms.

Although their style of music won’t blow your mind the songs themselves aren't too shabby. Some are more notable than others but there are no doubt some delightful melodies and rhythms that they present that sounded good to me.

The first track “Never Go Sent” bursts out of the gates with a distorted lead guitar, crashing drums and bass before quickly settling into the verse. It goes back and forth quickly and hits you fast. The band feeds off the fast BPM and provides a solid of energy. The vocals are strong and sung with conviction especially when the vocalist repeats the phrase “Never Go Sent.”

“Down In Vail “ plays out in a similar fashion to the first song except this song has a bit of build up in the beginning rather than bursting out of the gate. Sifferman really lays into his vocals on this song and layers them so they bleed into each other. The song also contains a technically proficient guitar solo. “Fishing” and “Rest My Head” continue with ‘90s alternative pop sound while the closer “Jonathan” goes off in a slightly different direction. The guitar chords, backing vocals and even drumming amount to a mid-nineties punk vibe. Towards the end of the song the band briefly flirts with ska before going back to a slew of power chords. 

Great Harvest is a solid effort but may have made more of an impression in the early ‘90s. That being said 30-somethings like myself always seem to have a hankering for nostalgia.
