Hailing from France, Chasing Daisy is making a style of metal that has been evolving since the mid-1990s. This type of high-octane metal that reminds me of a combination of Linkin Park and Evanescence is arguably the most over saturated genre. 

The four-piece comprised of Thomas (vocals), Alex (guitar), Jason (guitar/scream) and Snoozy (drums) formed in 2014 has no problem following most of the staples and tropes associated with the genre on their recent release Appearances but they haven’t yet found enough original elements to stick out from the crowd. Of course this is easier said than done and being such a newly formed band they should be happy with the caliber of material they released with Appearances. The band has no lack of technical talent and the songs are enjoyable if you are a fan of the genre.

The band opens with “Broken Place” which revolves around palm muted distorted guitars, double bass drum and a steady bass. They insert the predictable demon-like growls, which seem to be on every other mainstream metal album. The band is incredibly tight and in the pocket. I have to give it up to the drummer who is like a human metronome. 

“The Poison” follows a similar formula, which contains grandiose choruses and backing harmonies that are mimicked from the first song. I have to admit the band packs in a surplus of changes and doesn’t let up till the song is over. 

“Surrender” is the first deviation. It opens with a piano, guitar and vocal. They are more melancholy and reflective on this track and do so at a slower BPM. On top of that they occasionally add orchestral strings, which was marginally effective. “Hope for Tomorrow” reverts to the intensity you heard on the first two tracks. It’s a non-stop assault that is the heaviest the band gets. 

Chasing Daisy can easily hang with some of the other bands in this genre. The only issue is that they are arriving at the party a little late. If they can add some new weapons to their arsenal they should be well on their way.
