The Cardboard Cutouts is an indie rock/alternative band based out of Ohio. In their debut album Ebb and Flood the band of four produce sounds similar to Weezer, The Dismemberment Plan and has the laid back feel of a Yellowcard record. The band created these songs during their freshman year of college, packing the lyrics with emotion and a strong sense of relate-ability. Ebb and Flood navigates the rough waters of love and friendship and withstands ground throughout the tumultuous storm. The compilation of tracks on this record range from laid back, to excited and energetic. The combination of sounds reminds me of Yellowcard mixed with The Weepies. The Cardboard Cutouts first album features engaging and catchy lyrics. “Outcomes,” the first track on the album, highlights an issue everyone seems to struggle with. The song, wrapping you up in its comforting embrace, discusses how difficult it is to just let go and move on. Musically, the song is robust with creative guitar, bass and drum work. The vocals are catchy and easy to enjoy. One of the titular tracks “Flood” speaks to the outcast; the lonely sole. All of our indie spirits have struggled with acceptance at one point or another and this song really resonates with me. The BPM moves and the fast and contains some of the most technically impressive playing. In addition to the mellow tunes, there are also songs that have more of an upbeat feel to them. “Screaming Matches” and “Will You Please Shut Up?” continue to tackle the struggles humans have with society and relationships. In its entirety, these songs tell a story. Ebb and Flood is a compelling collection of lyrics with a great rock beat. This album features songs that are relatable and easy to listen to. While some of the songs may be a little slower than others, as a whole, this CD evens out musically. Almost everyone has fears of some nature rooted in their very souls; these songs reach out and grasp those feelings. I was impressed with the emotions the lyrics tackled, and this is one of those albums that resonates with you. Become A Fan
