Buried Voices is a hard rock band/metal band from Columbia, SC, that have spent the last couple of years dedicated to working on their debut full-length entitled Arson for the Heart. The band describes itself as "hard and heavy horror and heartache" and touches upon a myriad of topics like depression, suicide, death, love, loss, heartache, injustice, power, blood, destruction and the Salem witch trials. The album sticks to all the criteria of the hard rock/metal genre that people who are fans of the genre will gravitate towards. It’s filled with distorted guitars, crashing drums, bass and respectable vocal work. The band sound is comparable to a number of bands including Alice in Chains, Motorhead and Dokken to name a few. Arson for the Heart is eleven songs deep and fairly consistent in terms of energy and song quality. That being said there were a couple that were highlights. “Scream Into The World” has a fast BPM and is reminiscent of ‘80s metal. The song is solid but pay extra special to some of those drum fills; good stuff. “Sarah Good” was a personal favorite and also contained some of the engaging musical exploration. Right after the second chorus I loved the instrumental breakdown. The guitar sounds like it’s penetrating the 9th level of hell as the vocalist screams, “what have we done.” “Perfect the Art of Sorrow” is really heavy and veers towards Death Metal during certain sections. At around the one- minute mark a vocalist produces a blood curdling demon death growl while singing the lines “Perfect the Art of Sorrow.” As the album progresses the band plows through a couple more head banging tunes Including “Bomb Where the Heart Used to Be,” “Bloodshine” and “Absent.” They close the album with “A Different Way to Destroy.” Arson for the Heart isn’t reinventing the wheel by any stretch of the imagination and has its mishaps but overall it is a solid metal/hard rock album. It won’t convert anyone who isn’t already into the genre but if you are I’d say this is worth a spin.
